This is the speedo sensor that is located on the drivers side of the gearbox on 2wd models and on the transfer case on 4wd models. This signal is sent to your speedometer and the engine's main computer. When this sensor fails due to internal electrical faults or damage, you will experience an incorrect speed reading or a speedo that doesn't work at all. Driving with a faulty speed sensor is a safety risk, can lead to speeding fines, and may cause check engine lights or poor running as the engine management system isn't receiving the correct data.
