This is the viscous fan hub, or fan clutch, that bolts to the front of the engine's water pump. Your main engine cooling fan bolts directly to this hub. A failing viscous hub is a common cause of overheating. The internal silicone fluid can break down or leak, preventing the fan from engaging properly when the engine gets hot. Conversely, it can also seize, causing the fan to run at full speed constantly, which creates excessive noise and puts a constant strain on the engine. If left unchecked, a faulty hub can lead to severe engine damage from overheating or a shattered fan blade damaging your radiator and other under-bonnet components.
