This rubber boot is fitted where the clutch fork enters the gearbox bell housing. Its job is to seal the opening, preventing water, dust, and grime from getting into your clutch assembly. The original boot is made of rubber, which perishes and cracks from constant heat cycles and exposure to the elements. A split or missing boot is a direct path for contaminants to enter the bell housing.
If left unfixed, dirt and moisture will contaminate the clutch friction plate, pressure plate, and thrust bearing. This leads to premature wear, causing shuddering, clutch slip, and difficult gear changes, resulting in a much more expensive clutch replacement down the track. Replacing this boot is cheap insurance, especially when you have the gearbox out.
